Hideous Fish
Well, Doug has been campaigning to have hot lunches at school instead of taking a sack lunch since about the middle of last year. For the past year or so, we've just always done sack lunches. For one thing, it is a lot more cost effective. For another thing, I can better monitor how much he eats of his lunch if he is bringing the left-overs home (versus a hot lunch where what isn't eaten gets left on his plate). (We used to always order him hot lunches several years ago and his teachers would report back that he would only take one or two bites and then throw all the rest of it away...being much too busy socializing to get much eating done. That seemed like such a waste of money, to me.)
Doug asked again last week if he could have hot lunches. I told him to discuss it with his dad. Instead, he decided to take matters into his own hands... This morning, he informed his teachers that he had "forgotten" his lunch. He had his lunch box stashed in his locker. His special ed. teacher knows him pretty well, by now, though...and she thought something was amiss. So, she walked him to his locker and had him open his locker up. Sure enough...there was the "forgotten" lunch. Grant and I decided that his lying should have some consequence beyond the note of apology that his teacher had him write, so, tonight he had to stay in his room while the rest of us had fried chicken for supper (a menu item he is fond of), then, I took him to Captain D's and bought him a fish fillet for his supper. He detests fish. He had to eat the entire piece for supper. To my surprise, he munched it down quite quickly and happily commented, "Um good." To which his ever helpful little sister said, "You like it Doug?" "Yes," he replied. "You can have it every night then Doug!" chimed in Rayna. To which, Doug, slightly panicked, replied, "No!" Guess his taste buds have suddenly changed afterall...he just didn't want his mother to know that his punishment was indeed a punishment.
