Tagged, tagged, tagged, tagged, tagged, tagged, tagged, tagged, and tagged!

Rats! I got tagged by Elissa over at The Harrells...guess THAT will teach me to be a cyber stalker, huh?!

Rules:
1. Link to the person who tagged you and post the rules
2. Share 7 random or weird facts about yourself
3. Tag 7 random people at the end of your post and link to them
4. Let each person know they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Oh well...let's see, I am suppose to link back to the person who tagged me (done!) and then I have to list 7 weird or random things about myself. hmmmm....

hmmmm.....

hmmmmmm.....

Okay, I know....I will ask DARCY! She won't have any trouble thinking of something to write! Here it goes...

Darcy's input:
1. You can't cook.

2. You're 47. (DING...I've told her a bazillion times that I am NOT 47!!! I'm 46! and I have only BEEN 46 for seven measly days, at that!!!)

Ummm...I can't think of anything else! (Which just goes to show you that Darcy is far more like her mother than anyone might have thought!!! Neither of us can think of weird things about me...or, sadly, even INTERESTING things about me!)

Okay, give me a minute here... guess I will just go for RANDOM things about myself:

1. I love dog training. I used to do it competitively. I always thought that training kids would be as easy as training dogs. Wrong. You see, the thing is, my social worker really frowned on me putting a choker collar on Darcy and giving her a little pop on the end of the leash when she acted out. Plus, she didn't like dog biscuits.

2. I was the first child in my family and the first grandchild on both sides. In fact, I was the ONLY grandchild on both sides for a rather long time. No, that doesn't mean I was spoiled! I was ultra RESPONSIBLE...and MAYBE kind of bossy.

3. I have been trying (off and on!) to learn to speak Spanish for 33 years now and Chinese (Mandarin) for 23 years now. At least I don't give up on a goal! (Yes, you guessed it, I don't speak but a smattering of either.) But, that small fact has not at all dimmed my ENTHUSIASM for studying it! I have an IMPRESSIVE collection of Rosetta Stone programs (Spanish I & II and Chinese I & II)...and lots of books and flashcards. I can ALWAYS find another book or learning aide in the foreign language section of any bookstore to be irresistably tempted by!

4. I dearly love teaching English as a Second Language (strictly on the amateur/totally volunteer level, that is!)...and am far more successful at teaching others to speak English than I am at mastering other languages, myself. (of course, I also have Rosetta Stone's English I & II!) ....hmmm...I wonder what that says about me? maybe just that I have no talent for learning a language but it doesn't stop me from teaching a language!...I'm not as smart as my students!!!...BUT, that is to their advantage, I suppose, because it makes me a REALLY empathetic/encouraging teacher! I am always just so amazed when other people can learn to speak English...I'm like, "Wow! Look what you're doing!!! I wish I could do that!!!"

5. I love learning about other cultures and traveling. My life has been so enriched by the friends I have met along the way from other countries.

6. I will eat almost anything. I'm picky...but I will try anything. I'm a lot less picky in a foreign country! I can't think of a single food item that would GROSS me out. I don't care for sushi...but it doesn't gag me. I like fried chicken feet. The little eely things we ate in China weren't that great, but they didn't gross me out. When a member in our group asked our translator, "Is this beef?", pointing to the only non-eely little things on the table and the translator said, "Yes." and my wary companion said, "Is it REALLY?" and the translator said, "No."...it didn't bother me a bit. I kept eating. We never were told what it really was. It tasted good, whatever it was.

7. They know me by my order at our DQ drive-through...it is always the same..."Can I have a medium Tin Roof Brownie blizzard without any chocolate syrup in it and can you make it with half vanilla ice cream and half chocolate ice cream and only put in 1/3 of the normal amount of mix-ins? Oh...and can I have a pup cup with that, too?" They never ask me to repeat my order and they always make it perfectly! And, if I don't order the pup cup, they will call back through the speaker and ask, "Do your have your dog with your today? Would you like a pup cup with that?" Did I mention that Ransom has a HUGE ice cream addiction? She can scent a Dairy Queen three miles away!!!

Yeah!!!!...got that done!!!!....now, let's see...I have to tag seven people....hmmm.... Guess I can't tag the Ellerbees from Meant to Bee (considering I stole the "been tagged" logo off their blog just today...ie, they've already been hit, themselves!)

Sooo....

I'm tagging:

1. Gram (Mary Patty)...she's been a blogger for a whole 36 hours now, so it's about time SHE got tagged! (0:

2. Checking Boxes because they haven't posted in a while now!!!

3. Reed's folks over at Landlife, because I always enjoy picking on them!

4. Vivian over at Bits and Pieces, because she actually posted a video recently that combines her hobby (knittin') and her husband's hobby (pickin')...and it is pretty darn funny! So, she might as well give us some weird facts to read when we all pop over there to check out that hilarious video!

5. Debz over at Sugar and Spice and a Little Rice because she had this hilarious character on her blog Monday, and I just wanted a good excuse to steal it and put it on my blog, too! (See, the reasoning? I have to PUT the illustration here so that you will understand why I am TAGGING her! Works, doesn't it!!!)

6. Noemi over at Living the Florida Life because she is, like, my very NEWEST blogger friend!!! (I am beginning to write like Junie B. Jones speaks...that is a bit scary! I really DO need to get done with this post because it is bringing out weirdness I didn't even know I had!) (Please...don't anyone else tag me! This is just too much work and too much strain on my poor brain! Let's see...I'm ALMOST done...just have to pick on one more poor soul! Who shall it be? Duck, Duck, Goose, Duck...)

7. Okay...drum roll please(!)...the last victim will be BRIANA'S MOM over at Life with Briana because since she is so sweet to comment so often, maybe she won't hate me for drafting her into a meme!

oh...wait...I just recalled something from the far recess of my mind...a blogger who once mentioned that she LIKED memes...I remember her making this observation, because at the time that I read it, I was clueless as to what a meme was! So, going above and BEYOND the call of duty, I am going to tag an EIGHTH VICTIM!!!...

8. Vivacemusica over at Words Dry and Riderless!

Oh, wow!...I'm really on a roll now, because I just thought of one more person to pick on this go around!...

9. My friend over at Forever and a Day because she would be terrific at this. SHE, unlike me, can actually think of INTERESTING random things to write about!!!

Whooo...I'm done!

Just a few more quick updates...

If you want to know the latest on the household illnesses, see my overly long comment in the comment section of Friday's post!

If you have noticed "Chuck" being added as the author of this blog, don't be puzzled! He doesn't have any plans of co-authoring the blog! He is the developer of the cool cumulus link lists that I recently installed in my sidebar. However, computer inept that I am, I managed to do something (who only knows what) to the link list for "Families in the Process of Adopting" which locked the list shut (it will no longer drop down, making the link visible like it is suppose to do when you click on the box that has lines through it). So, Chuck, himself, is looking into the problem. How cool is that! (THANK YOU, CHUCK!) So, while he is trying to figure out how I disabled the linklist, he is temporarily signed on as a blog administrator. (Meanwhile, you can sitll click onto those blogs by using the temporary work-around that I put in the sidebar just above the locked up link list.)

Finally, an update on who has accepted the creativity challenge for May...
So far our very small group includes:

Beverly of
http://glenysluckymama.blogspot.com

Darcy of
http://darcysoccerblog.blogspot.com

Kim of
http://kleinsingermany.blogspot.com

and myself (of here!)

The possibilities are limitless, but, so far, each of us has chosen to express our creativity through photography. We will be posting one new photo each day in May on our respective blogs. I am really surprised that no one else out there has signed on! (Flat Reed, you need to have a TALK with your Dad!) For those of you who already post daily, anyway...this could be a pretty easy challenge...and you don't have to do photos...you could just post a "Thought for the Day" or anything...just to flex your creativity wings a bit! Anyway, I am looking foward to seeing what develops through May! It will be fun keeping tabs on the blogs involved! And, it still isn't too late to sign up!!!! Just let us know in a comment to this post if you want to join us!!!

A Challenge for the Month Ahead...

Elena of "French Toast Girl" wrote:

Commit to create something every day in the month of May. (Note: last year I did over 31 paintings. I felt really rushed. So this year, I will spend more than one day on a painting if I want to. You can do the same, or do 31 separate paintings, or take 31 photos, make collages, or write a page of your novel every day.)

This sounds like a fun idea, to me! If you go to Elena's site, you can join her flicker group and post photos of each day's project. I thought it would be fun, though, if within our small group of readership, we kept track of everyone who wants to join this challenge for May. Leave me a comment on this post if you want to be included in the list of blogs for all of us to check daily in May to see your creative efforts for that day. Also, give us a description of what you plan to do through May. (For example, I want to take a photo each day...well, anyone who knows me knows that I cannot take just one photo...if my fingers touch the camera I am compelled to keep shooting until I have filled my 2 gig card! But, I plan to CHOOSE one photo out of the photos I have taken each day to feature on my blog for that day...and maybe a few lines of something to place alongside it (a fragment of Scripture that has touched my heart that day, or a line from a poem or song...just some fragment of wording). For those of you in the doldrums of awaiting child referral, this could be just the thing to help May fly by!

Leave a comment here if you are rising to the challenge! (You don't necessarily have to post photos of your daily projects to the Flicker Group. But DO put them on your BLOG so we can all see!....and do let me know if you plan on doing this with us so I can add your blog to the list I publish of those who are participating!)

There is actually someone out there laboring under the misguided impression that I am a DEEP THINKER!
...OH YES!!! Whoo-Hoo!!!!

Becky, over at "Chloe Makes Six..." recently honored this blog by nominating it for the Thinking Blogger Award! The best part about being given this award is that it gives me the priviledge of nominating the next five blogs for the the award! Too cool, huh?! I really had fun with this as I ruminated over my choices. I chose two adult bloggers and three kid bloggers.

The first blog I am choosing is "Words Dry and Riderless", because even the photos posted on that blog evoke introspection...and the thoughts voiced there are definitely those of an insightfully deep thinker. The author of the blog is a young teacher (highschool, I think) in the remote wilderness of the Yukon Territories.

The second blog I am choosing is "Ella Meng's Blog". Ella is a bright, bubbly university student in China. She has to be a deep thinker to blog in a foreign language (English)! I just love hearing through her stories how vaious holidays are celebrated in China and getting glimpses of another culture through the stories she writes.

Next, I am choosing Henry of "Otter World". He is a second grader and has been blogging since November '06. That is just too cool! His Mom, Vivian, of "Bits and Pieces" has plenty of reasons to be proud of him!

Next, I'm choosing Emmie of "Sister 2 Two" because I love reading her blog and seeing what she is going to come up with next! I especially enjoy the slideshows, photos, and stories about her little brother and sister. Emmie is a seventh grader and is the daughter of Steffie from "Never Too Many". Emmie began her blog in December of '06.

Finally, I am shamelessly choosing my own daughter, Darcy, because she is my favorite blogger of all! She is eleven years old and is finishing up the seventh grade (homeschooled). She has been an active blogger since May of '05. She is currently on her fourth blog. (When she feels she has outgrown the theme of her blog, she creates an entirely new one and starts afresh.) Her most recent writings can be found on "Darcy's Soccer Blog". There, if you haven't already read it, you can find the first three installments of her famous "Dog Series" (which is one of my personal favorites!). "Batgirl's Superfantastic Blogsite" was the last blog she authored prior to her current blog. (My favorite portions of that blog aren't on the front page, but, back in the archives where she did some genuinely substantial writing.)

Oh, guess I need to explain how this award works! Now the five blog authors mentioned above have the priviledge of snagging the "Thinking Blogger Award" logo to display on their own site...and, they are to nominate the next five reciepients of the award! The five winners above, need to make a post on their blogs with a link back to this one and also links to each of the five blogs they in turn nominate!

Congratulations Vicki, Ella, Henry, Emmie, and Darcy!

A Whole LOT of Weirdness!!!

As you probably recall, Frances over at Unyielding tagged me a week or so back to list out six weird things about myself. This was HER list:

My weirdness according to my husband is that I actually enjoy looking for "things" on his skin to scratch off. I have to say that is true as shameful as that is.

Another weirdness is that I only like using pens that "feel" nice to write with. I have a pretty big collection
That collection comes from "borrowing" from cashiers, customer service attendants, waitr staff, and hostesses. I leave nicer tips if the pens are very cool!
My toes don't touch. Yes, I was teased. I have small "nubbins" for toes and the pads are round like a tree frogs. I love sandals despite.
I have small feet and I love show shopping because my size is always available and I can try the "display" show and not have to fish thru boxes.
I am incredibly vain yet I hate my body. I can't pass a mirror with out primping. I drive with the rear view pointed at me. (I use the sides properly) Apparently this is hereditary as I noticed my sister does the same, but then again, she looks just like me! LOL!
Ok, that's it! I hope you enjoyed a look at my weirdness. I embrace it and well, I think that you should too... well, your own weirdness... not mine... that'd be weird... LOL!

And that started it all! I had a lot of trouble figuring out what to write about myself, but finally came up with:

1) I prefer writing letters to talking on the phone. I just love written words flowing out onto a sheet of paper (or, these days!, neatly clicking across my computer screen).

2) Given my druthers, I would stay up all night and sleep all day.

3) Well...actually, now that I think about it, we REALLY don't need to go back over THAT one again! (Admitting to it the first time was, perhaps, one time too many!)

4) I like collecting blankets.

5) My husband says I use weird sayings. I don't think "slow as Moses" or "Hurts like sixty" are unique. Lots of people use such phrases...it isn't like I just make them up!

6) I get engrossed in books to the point that I am totally oblivious to everything else around me.

7) I only like bananas if they are smothered in peanut butter.

8) I can take 11,000 photos in one two week vacation without even giving it a second thought.

Sooo, now that I have recapped my own weirdness and chronicled France's post which began it all, I thought you might enjoy reading about everyone else's strange traits!...

My sister-in-law, Jan, (who doesn't have her own blog, poor soul!) left her list in the comment section of my original post:

ok i looked at some lists to try and see what kind of stuff and all i can think of is-
1)I have a wierd sis-in-law and she has 3 wierd children.
2)i hate to press the shift key.
3)i don't like cold butter(i think that must be wierd 'cause my kids both love it and we had to eat it in grade school)

Darcy from Batgirl's Superfantastic Blog Site wrote:

AAAAUUUUUGGGGHHHHHH I'VE BEEN TAGGED!!!!!!!!! *MOAN*

I have to write 6 weird things about me.

1. If I have an empty stomach and drink lotsa water and jump up and down you can hear the water slosh in my stomach!

2. I can lay on my stomach, bend my legs over my back and wipe my nose holding a kleenex with my toes.

3. I've read "Eragon" 11 times and "Eldest" 9 times.

4. I DESPISE math (My cousin thinks I'm weird 'cause I don't like math and I think he's weird cuz he's a math whiz.)

5. I LOVE shoot 'em up movies. (Dad does too! He has at least 50 John Wayne movies. He got me hooked on 'em!)

6. It doesn't bother me if my glasses are filthy and all out of whack.

Ashley at Hannah for Christmas wrote:

I was tagged (first time ever, BTW) by a fellow adoptive blogger mom at Dumplings Three and asked to list six strange things about myself. Here goes:

1. I love cheesy pop music - I particularly like the songs on my Partridge Family and a Brady Bunch greatest hits CDs.
2. I began reading at a really early age (somewhere between 3 and 4), and I can't walk or drive past anything in print without reading it.
3. I used to bite my nails, but I don't anymore; instead I chew on my cuticles to relieve tension.
4. I struggle to throw away anything that has writing on it without reading it first, and I seldom throw away letters; because of that, I have tons of boxes of cards letters from friends, several dating back to when I was in third grade.
5. When I was a child, I would get upset if my mom made a PB&J sandwich and put the peanut butter on the wrong side (I think I liked it on the top); flipping the sandwich over didn't fix it (can you say, "type A personality?").
6. I am related to Jesse James.

Lisa at the unlisted blog Nurses' Notes, wrote:

Well, some weird things about me are as follows:

-I CAN NOT STAND FOR MY PILLOW ESPECIALLY, JACKET, SCARF OR GLOVES TO TOUCH THE FLOOR, EVEN IN MY OWN HOUSE! AND I CAN NOT STAND FOR MY HUSBAND TO EVEN HAVE HIS FEET NEAR MY PILLOW OR THE HEAD OF THE BED. AND I CAN NOT STAND FOR HIM TO PUT M Y PILLOW UNDER HIS ARM PIT WITHOUT A SHIRT ON!!!! SICK!!!
-I like certain things to be PERFECT --- like I can't leave any wrinkles in the covers.
-When I start a project I will stay up all hours of the night and day until it is completed -- then get mad when anybody helping tires out and wants to go to bed.
-I am extremely impatient! Instant gratification!
-I like for things to be perfectly in order not semi perfect. For example I do/did not want my husband to sit on the couch before anyone comes over, because he will make a wrinkle in the couch cover.
-Some people might think it is weird that I have my clothes all laid out the night before including the sock and undies -- my scrubs are always on a hanger with everything in the pockets with my name badge attached ready for work or school the next day I have to go in.
-There are so many weird things about me I just can't think of them right now.

Val from Happy Girl(s) wrote:

I've been tagged! It had to happen, sooner or later! :)

Monica, over at "Dumplings,Three" has tagged me to respond to a "Six Things That Are Strange About Me" questionaire.

I think it might be harder to find 6 things that AREN'T strange about me, but o.k... since she asked....

1) I hate the word "Spanish". I love Spanish food, Spanish people, Spain, etc etc, but I hate hate hate the sound of the word.

2) I can not bear to touch those recycled cardboard drink holders they hand out at drive-through windows. They're like nails on a chalkboard to me.

3) I can pick things up, and write with, my toes. I can remove Kevin's pants with them too.. not that this is a picture you need in your head...

4) My fingers curl into fists when I yawn.

5) I could pretty much live on heavy whipping cream, sipped out of the carton. Unwhipped. And yes, I know it has 50 calories per teaspoon. But I love it.

6) I'm my own cousin. Really. Trust me.

Oddly, Monica said it was hard for her to come up with her list. It took me all of about 5 minutes. Maybe I shouldn't be telling you that, eh...?

MK BookWorks at The Adventures of Empress Fussy Pants had this to say:

1. I don't like (I mean really don't like) when food boxes aren't opened properly. I like the boxes to be neat and not all torn (which can also make things inside the box stale).

2. When I misplace something I can not do anything else until I have found it - including sleep or eat. I should just misplace everything.......

3. I buy three different toothpastes every time. One is for the Empress, but the other two are for me and DH. I can not share toothpaste with my DH. HE is a squisher, cap leaver-offer, dry-crusty-paste-leaving-in-the sink sort and I am decidedly not. He is also a minty-fresh and I am a cinnamon or vanilla mint (but only if I can not find cinnamon).

4. I have a pile of books near my bed and I am usually reading all of them at the same time. Same for mags, and a few periodicals.

5. I can not sleep or actually do anything without lip balm nearby. I seem to have perennially chapped lips and must have balm or lipstick on and available to reapply all the time. I have been known to get out of bed and go downstairs to restock. I also can not retire for the evening without a bottle of a particular brand of spring water (Schmoland Schpring). There is actually a really funny story about this that has to do with almost costing me my graduate degree! Someday I will write it up.

6. I do not like to drive my car without my little seat belt adjuster. I am short (5') and the seat belt chokes me if I do not use one. My old one broke and so far the replacements have fallen short of my expectations... I use them because I must - but it is cramping my Super Mom Mini Van-ness to have to use the substitutes until I find the right ones.

If you are reading this AND you blog.. consider yourself tagged!! BTW Dumpling's Mom - I totally would have put your second item: Sleep all day and stay up all night - but I do not consider that weird!! LOL

Patrick at Adoption Log wrote:

Oh no! I've been tagged by a fellow blogger on the weblog 'Dumplings, Three'! Now she has given me the impossible task to list 6 things that are strange about me.

At first I thought that was easy, but the more I think about it, the more difficult it gets! But...after a couple of sleepless nights I've come up with a list.

So behold...6 strange facts about myself:

1.
Each Saturday morning I write down the measurements of the energy meters in our house. So I register the water, gas and electricity measurements. Then I put them in an Excel sheet and I can see our water and energy usage in a chart. Many people think that's a bit exaggerated to do that, but I like to look at cool and nifty charts, and get aware of our energy usage at the same time. And at the long run, it saves money on the electricity bill! Ha!

2.
Place a bag of delicious 'drop' near me, and it will mysteriously disappear. At that same moment I gain some weight, twice the weight of that bag. Don't ask me why or how, it just happens!

3.
People who know me, see me as a nice, quiet, shy, peaceful guy, who cares about people and the world we live on. And that's what I am. Really. But ... then they find out about my 'other side'. Mwuhahah! I love to watch the most gory, bloody, scary horror movies, I like playing violent computergames and I enjoy listening to loud, noisy death/nu/doom/black/stoner metal. A weird combination, I know. But I truly am a nice guy. Really!

4.
I can wiggle my thumbs in such a way, that they kind of get dislocated or locked. It looks gross, but it doesn't hurt at all. I really like it, to make people press on my thumb, so they can feel it snap into place again. When they respond by a loud: 'EEEEEWWWWWW!', then I am a happy man.

5.
Toiletpaper hanging from a roll, always has to be OFF the wall. Not against it, see the picture to find out what I mean. When I encounter an incorrect roll of toiletpaper, I instantly change its position into the right one. No matter where I am.

6.
Actually, I'm over it now, but I have been afraid of turkeys. Yes, I do mean these ugly, horrible, dangerous, wild, vicious, mean, clucking, gobbling, raving mad, set for world domination, big birds!! When I was a young kid, a nasty experience at a pet farm with one of these deadly creatures altered my perception about these horrible beasts. I still don't like them, but I don't avoid them anymore. Thanks to my wife I 'learned to live with them'.

Phew! It was fun to look for strange things about myself, but I can conclude, I'm quite a normal guy actually....

Patrick also wrote:

Oh nee!

Dus zie daar...6 vreemde dingen betreffende mijzelf:

1.

Too cool! I wish I could keep two different blogs up and running in TWO DIFFERENT languages!!!

Debbie at Gallant Family's SUGAR AND SPICE And All Things Nice About Adoption wrote:

I've been tagged by Monica and was asked to list 6 weird things about
myself. It shouldn't be hard I'm sure I could come up with many more! So here it goes.

1. I live on an Island but I cannot swim. I almost drowned once so I kinda lost my courage.

2. I can drink coffee late at night and have no problem sleeping. Maybe because I take a triple triple!! warm milk is good to help you sleep.

3. I can hold my hands in front of me and make one go clockwise and the other counter clockwise simultaneously .

4. I am no doubt one of the only women I know of who hates talking on the phone, If you are
going to talk longer than 5 min. get in the car and come visit.........bring coffee.....triple triple.!!

5. I don't mind the smell of skunk. Yup that's weird for sure.

6. I have been caught crying over a TV commercial, on more than one occasion.
One example was a MasterCard commercial, little boy at the golf course first thing in the morning practicing hitting the ball, standing at the tee he makes an amazing shot that lands 2-3 feet from the pin and slowly rolls as the little boy squints and winces his nose in eager anticipation and that it rolls into the hole and he is amazed at his talent, he looks to his left then to his right no one was there to witness his hole in one and his little heart drops then from behind he hears a hand clap and turns around as the greens keeper turns the lawn tractor back on and continues to cut the grass. The little boy puts on a proud grin as if to say now they will believe me.
There really are some things in life money can't buy ! And for everything else there is MasterCard.

There is almost as much creamer in my coffee as there is coffee.

I am usually cold, especially in the winter. Regardless of what the thermostat says.

Well, Monica over at Dumplings, Three decided I needed to lighten up. She's absolutely right! I'm supposed to list 6 things that are weird about me. (Only 6?)

1. I sing Italian arias in the shower. "Il mio bel foco" is a standard. Sometimes I switch to Turandot and "Nessun Dorma," if I'm feeling up to it. Except I forget some of the words and end up la-la-ing the melody instead. My mom warped my brain with Broadway showtunes as a child; occasionally one of those will creep in to the repertoire. I've had a crush on Harry Connick, Jr. since I was in junior high school, so sometimes I sing his music in the shower, too.

2. I get a perverse pleasure out of winning Scrabble when playing my husband (who is very good, and a much nicer player than I am). I like knowing all the weird two-letter combinations, and the few Q words that don't need a U.

3. I'm rather proud that my daughters don't like Barbies or Disney Princesses. I personally have a collection of porcelain dolls representing various strong women of history - Susan B. Anthony, Sacajawea, Pearl S. Buck, Marie Curie, Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Tubman, and many others. They stand near my desk like little feminist voodoo dolls. There's not a single Asian woman among them, though, which irks me - and the series went out of production a while ago, so it won't do much good to complain to the historical society that produced them. Anyway, Sarah is hoping to be Medusa (again) this coming Halloween, and we've looked at the Greek myth together. (I think it's a hoot, although tying all those snakes into her hair and spraying it green took ages last time!) Taking Medusa's picture standing next to all her tulle-wrapped, sequined, pink fairy princess classmates is satisfyingly fun, though.

4. I love to garden, but I'm not very good at it. Well, I love the IDEA of gardening, but tend to put off pruning and pulling weeds. I can give you the scientific names of the dead plants, though. :)

5. I have some infrequently practiced, somewhat peculiar talents. I play bassoon, various percussion instruments, and the piano, I can juggle 3 objects, I can twirl "devil sticks," and I can do a pretty good routine with a drill team Tall Flag. Well... I can do most of these after practicing up a little. And don't ask me to wear the short skirt I used to for drill team - my high school figure was a lot better for that! Oh, and I can tie knots in cherry stems with my tongue. At least if the doctorate doesn't work out, I can join the circus. My children find me very entertaining. (That will switch to "embarrassing" once they get a little older.)

6. I find hauling telescopes and optical gear through prickly-pear infested fields in the darkest dark of Nebraskan nowhere to be a fun way to spend a week with my husband. So - we're compatibly weird. :) (We haven't been to the Nebraska Star Party in a couple of years, though - hoping to get back soon!)

Well - that's six. I didn't get to talk about my five cats, my "interesting" crochet projects, my homemade aquarium CO2 production devices, or that I actually enjoy doing minor plumbing and electrical repairs. I'll save those for later, I guess.

So, 6 things that are strange about me (of course, there are likely more!!):

1. I love wedge fries with melted cheddar cheese on them, and the dipped in Blue Cheese! YUM. Sis and BIL teased me this weekend saying it was a 'craving' (that being paper-pregnant), but really... it isn't! I tried it at BW3's one day and was hooked. Clogged arteries and all... that's why I run! hehe.

2. I love fabric, and I have a TON of it. ;-)

3. I don't care about having laundry sitting in the family room, but I hate having a dirty kitchen. Ok, so maybe that isn't strange... but it is true.

4. I'm not a morning person, but I'm not a night-owl either. I like the middle of the afternoon, early evening the best.

5. I can't sleep if my face is cold. So, if the room is cold and even if the rest of me is warm, I have to turn up the heat until it feels warm in the room or I can't sleep. Yes, I'm odd.

6. I would rather watch my favorite TV shows than a movie when I'm by myself. Not sure why, but I'm too lazy to put a movie in the DVD player, and I just prefer to watch movies with other people.

Lisa at A Comforter is not a Bedspread...and Other Observations says she plans on incorporating her list of strange things in a future post. We'll stay tuned!!!

You know, when it rains, it pours :-) Just as I finally got around to do the 10 things for Lesley, before I was done I got tagged by Monica to do six strange things about me. I'm happy to oblige.

1. I can wiggle my ears. It's said that this is quite uncommon since the muscles that control the ear wiggling are not active in most people. (by the way, Monica, my son is eight and his blog link is the second on the right -- Otter World. There isn't much going on there since he doesn't write a whole lot yet, but if he knows there is an audience I'm sure he'll be much more motivated to update more often.)

2. Given the opportunity, I can be completely addicted to romance novels, and I always cry buckets at the sad part of the story (there is always at least one).

3. I read old newspaper and magazines. The oldest paper in my current stack is from September, and I have New Yorkers from the late 90s that are still waiting in queue to be read one day.

4. I have close to 9,000 unread emails in one of my accounts, down from over 12,000. I will eventually go through all of them and delete most.

5. I'm completely anal about things going to the right place, especially in my kitchen. Just last night I was brewing over my inlaws putting dishes in the wrong places. I should be glad that they spend time with Henry and even wash dishes for me, but it bugs me to no end to find lids on the wrong pot and soup spoons stacked with tea spoons.

6. I can only talk about my work in English but if I need to memorize numbers they are in Chinese

Andrew at To Love, Honor, and Dismay is considering revealing his six strange characteristics in an upcoming post...again, we will stay tuned!!!

I’ve been tagged to describe six strange things about myself. I think everybody considers him/herself to be strange on some level; at least we’d like to think that we’re unique. I had thought that this would be an easy task, but as I’m sitting here thinking about it, I’m finding it quite difficult. And I’m prolonging having to start typing about my “weirdness” by going on and on with this introduction. One of my fears is that I would be discovering that my unique mix of strangeness might not be so unique after all. Then, there is that parallel fear that maybe yes, I am indeed crazy. (Okay, enough rambling, and onto the task at hand.)

1. I name a lot of things in my life, as in inanimate things that have no way of responding or communicating. I’m not going to reel off most of the things I have named, but will give you the more “romantic” examples. I have names for the trees outside my parents’ house. The cherry tree outside my bedroom window is “Blossom,” while a tree around the corner is “Boo” (after To Kill a Mockingbird). I used to talk to the trees at night, before going to bed. I mean literally – talk out loud to them. I also have a name for the moon, but, strangely enough, not for the sun. (And, I know, trees are not “inanimate” -- far from it.)

2. There must be an electromagnetic field that surrounds me. I’ve been known to turn on electrical devices by simply entering a room. I had freaked out a roommate by turning on my computer thus, without even touching the computer itself, or the desk that it was sitting on. I also beep whenever I go through airport security. I always try to guess which body part it would be, because it’s different almost every time. I expect one of these days, I’m going to be strip-searched before being allowed to board a plane. Clocks within my house always go out of whack, not because of the batteries dying or anything. For the longest time, I was convinced that I had a “clock ghost” that followed me around and tinkered with all of my watches and clocks, but now, I’m attributing it to my strange electromagnetic aura. At least, that’s what I tell myself. Until someone comes up with a better explanation, this is all I have to go by.

3. On that slightly paranormal note, I admit that I have heard music in my head before. Not as in having a song stuck in my head all day, but actually physically hearing music that is not there. I have, on more than one occasion, gone into my room to turn off my stereo, thinking to myself, “Now who had gone and turned on my music?” Then, I would realize that it was all in my head, that the stereo wasn’t even on. I could even have said which CD and track had been playing. And no, I don’t have fillings in my teeth that could have picked up radio signals. (I’ve never had any cavities, which in itself is strange, especially considering that I don’t take very good care of my teeth, and I definitely do not watch my sugar intake.)

4. Have I freaked everyone out yet? How about a weird food one now, before you all run from me in horror…. When I was little, I used to eat Kraft singles slathered with peanut butter, not on bread, but just like that – peanut butter on processed cheese. I also went through a phase where I made everyone give me the skin off of his/her chicken, and ate only the skin, sans the meat. Nowadays, when I’m down, I eat nothing but chocolate ice-cream and stoned wheat crackers, preferably unsalted ones. And, people who know me well would know I’m in a mood based on the way I nibble at my crackers. I guess the only way to describe it would be that I “pare” away at the corners with my teeth, working my way in. I take forever to eat a single cracker when I have the blues.

5. I’m painfully shy, and do not do well in social situations, but I love giving presentations, even in front of large crowds. In high school, I adored having to do oral presentations, and would always go over the time limit and overwhelm the class with my barrage of diagrams, audio-visual aids, and many a time, my watercolours. (I liked to use my school projects as an excuse to paint, and would find some way to incorporate watercolours into my English, Social Studies, and Science presentations.)

6. Phew, last one already. Whenever I need to de-stress or calm myself down, I would write out poems that I had memorized through the years. I have a mini library of poetry in the back of my brain, always ready to be channeled from mind to hand to page. I’m not sure why this activity always makes me feel better, as though the chaotic world is not that chaotic after all.

* Yes, I’m back after my doldrums. I can never resist a meme.

Wow! I feel like we all know each other so much better, now!!!

Frances over at Unyielding tagged me to list 6 things that are strange about me. This is the first time I have ever gotten "tagged"....hmmm....six weird things about me....hmmmm....maybe I need to call Grant and ask him to help me! (or DARCY...your kids think EVERYTHING is weird about you!)....hmmm....

1) I prefer writing letters to talking on the phone. I love to write...it is very clarifying and stress reducing for me. I just love written words flowing out onto a sheet of paper (or, these days!, neatly clicking across my computer screen).

2) Given my druthers, I would stay up all night and sleep all day. Guess that is a little bit odd...or at least different. Though it is the norm in China (to stay up all of OUR night and sleep during OUR day, that is! And, seein's how China's population DWARFS our population, I guess, actually, what is odd is to be SLEEPING during our night and staying AWAKE during our daylight hours...don't you think?)

3) Boy...this is really HARD. I coming up pretty blank here! I am sure I am an exceedingly weird soul, but, for the life of me, I can't think of any particular examples! Looking back to life before I married Grant, I was a lot weirder...something I remember from then that the very thought of completely appalls me now, but which seemed quite reasonable back then, is that I used to spray flea spray on my nightgown each night! (I had two large, indoor dogs who slept on my bed...and, even though I kept them well treated for fleas, there were always some hanging out in our yard ready to jump on them and ride back into the house after their last potty break for the night.) Oh, Grant....aren't you glad you never knew that about me until now!

4) Wow....this really is hard! I am going to quit here and go call Grant. I am sure he will have some insight into this matter!

Okay...Grant says (and this will be number 4) that I am obsessed with blankets. (I wouldn't characterize it as "obsessed"! I LIKE blankets...and I do like having those little throw blankets to wrap up in. I have quite a few of them because the kids always want to borrow them while I am using them...thus, I have two down throws and four or so fuzzy throws. I DO like blankets...small ones, big ones, thick ones, thin ones...they are awfully nice to wrap up in when I am chilly...which is most of the time! ESPECIALLY SINCE MY HUSBAND INSISTS ON HAVING OUR BEDROOM CEILING FAN ON ALL THE TIME...A VERITABLE BEDROOM BLIZZARD! Grant accuses me of liking to have our bedcovers all in a "wad". That isn't true. I have nothing against a neatly made bed...it is just that if I wrap up burrito style in the covers, I am so much WARMER!

5) Grant says I use weird sayings. I don't think "slow as Moses" or "Hurts like sixty" are unique. Lots of people use such phrases...it isn't like I just make them up!

6) Grant dreads the way I get engrossed in books. I don't read very many books...but, when I start one, I don't like ANYTHING interrupting me until I have completely digested the book from cover to cover. I LOVE to read...so, that seems like the perfect vacation activity to me...but Grant always thinks it is crazy that I bury my nose in a book and, according to him, am totally oblivious to the scenery and every moment of our vacation while I am in the midst of my book. And, like I said, I do not like to be interrupted...once I begin a book, I want to read non-stop from beginning to end. And I am a slow reader. I will go back and re-read entire paragraphs or pages just to fix the characters and/or ideas firmly in my mind.

7) Grant says the fact that I won't eat a banana without slathering peanut butter all over it is strange. Actually, NOT eating peanut butter on the banana is strange...we have five members in our family....four of us like bananas...only three of us ever EAT bananas (can't remember the last time I saw GRANT eat a banana, even though he likes them alright)....of the three of us who eat bananas, I am the most flexible. I WILL eat a banana without peanut butter once in a while...but Doug and Rayna act like it is the end of the world if I don't let them have peanut butter on their bananas....so...let's examine the facts....three people in our family actually EAT bananas and all three of them prefer them with peanut butter....hmmmm....sounds like peanut butter on bananas is the norm, not the exception!

8) Thought of one more...friends and relatives have occasionally commented it is weird how many photos I take. I took around 11,000 photos during a two week vacation last summer. That probably is a little excessive.

Hey, what do you know! I got two extra points listed!

Uh-oh...Darcy is back home now, and she has her own ideas about what is weird about her Mom:
1) "You could be a vegetarian--now THAT is FREAKY!" (Darcy detests vegetables.)
2) "You don't like cooking."
3) "You are forever thinking you need to be on a diet." (Hmmm...I notice she didn't say I am forever ON a diet.)
4) "You don't like Walker Texas Ranger." (Yes...I guess that would make me weird in this house!)
5) "It is FREAKY that you could live on chocolate and ice cream!" (Aha...THAT'S why I'm not ON a diet!)
6) "You don't like video games...that is WEIRD."

Now, I guess the way blog tagging works is that I list people below, with links to their blogs, and so "tag" them....
